What is a “Mommy Makeover” ?

The term “Mommy Makeover” refers to surgical techniques which, when combined, will help a woman regain the figure she enjoyed prior to pregnancy. While bearing children is indeed an extraordinary experience, the changes that occur in a woman’s body can sometimes be quite upsetting. When it comes to the breasts, they can often become stretched and sagged. After pregnancy the breasts can take on a deflated, smaller appearance when compared to what was present before pregnancy. In other cases, however, breast enlargement can occur during pregnancy that remains after childbirth beyond what the individual patient desires. From the standpoint of the abdomen, it is not uncommon for women to experience significant laxity and redundancy of the abdominal skin. This can occur whether or not a prior Caesarean section was necessary. Not only can the skin become quite stretched during pregnancy, but so does the abdominal wall. While a few lucky women find that the contour of their abdomen has returned following pregnancy, most discover that the abdominal wall itself has become loose. This results in a persistent, rounded bulging of the abdomen, particularly below the belly button. If stretch marks occur during pregnancy, these will typically remain and can be a source of dissatisfaction for some women following pregnancy. Many can be removed during a “tummy tuck”.

What is the goal of a Mommy Makeover?

Typically the goal is to improve the contour of the breasts following pregnancy according to the individual patient’s desires. Frequently this requires the use of breast implants for breast size augmentation. This will specifically address the typically deflated appearance that can occur in the upper portion of the breast following pregnancy. If a patient has experienced significant breast sag, a breast lift is necessary to reposition the breast tissue back to its youthful appearance. If the breasts remain too large following pregnancy, a breast reduction with lift might be appropriate.

Mommy Makeover Procedures

Breast Augmentation

An implant, either saline or silicone filled, can be placed to enhance the breast size, to fill the empty breast skin envelope, and to provide upper breast fullness that has been lost following pregnancy.

Breast Lift

If breast sag has developed, this typically requires removal of excess skin, repositioning of the nipple and the areola up to its previous “perky” location, and reshaping the breast to give it an attractive contour with or without the use of breast implants. Breast lift can certainly be combined with breast augmentation if a lifted and larger breast is desired.

Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty (or “tummy tuck”) is a common procedure during a Mommy Makeover and will be performed to address excess skin that has developed, excess fat that remains, and weakness and laxity that might have occurred in the abdominal wall (muscle and its fibrous covering). Through a tummy tuck, your tummy can be returned to a flatter, more defined pre-pregnancy contour.

Liposuction

On its own, or in combination with the procedures mentioned above, liposuction can help remove leftover pockets of fatty fullness that might remain following pregnancy.

Mommy Makeover Recovery

featuredThis can vary widely. If simply a breast augmentation is performed, then the recuperation would be merely a matter of a few days. If a tummy tuck is involved, this would typically require at least a week and a half and, more typically, two and a half weeks off of work and daily activities. When more procedures are done, more recuperation may be necessary. During your consultation, Dr. Behar will make sure that you understand what to expect so that you can plan accordingly. In general, most patients are able to return to full activity without restrictions in as little as four to six weeks postoperatively.

Every patient has her own set of unique desires and requirements. During your personal consultation with Dr. Behar, he will help you to understand what options are available and how the different procedures might best achieve your aesthetic goals.
