Also Known as Lipectomy

Liposuction, also known as suction lipectomy or lipoplasty, is a surgical technique that allows Dr. Behar to contour and shape areas where excess fat deposits are of cosmetic concern. While liposuction is not an appropriate substitute for a disciplined diet and active lifestyle, it can help to address areas where residual fat remains a concern. If you are frustrated by fatty collections, then liposuction may be the solution.

Liposuction is one of the most common procedures performed in the United States, and Dr. Behar is proud to offer over 20 years of experience and expertise at two conveniently located offices in Middle Tennessee.

Ideal Candidates

The ideal candidates for liposuction have realistic expectations for the procedure. Patients should understand that liposuction is not a weight reduction technique. A typical patient will lose only from 1 to 10 pounds of fat during the procedure. Liposuction is more of a sculpting procedure which is ideal for patients who have areas of localized fat deposits that cannot be eliminated through diet and exercise alone. Often the amount of weight loss required to reduce these deposits might be unrealistic.

It is not guaranteed that liposuction will reduce cellulite. If you have sagging skin in your abdominal area, you may be more suited for tummy tuck surgery, as liposuction does not tighten the skin.

Ideal candidates for liposuction have the following qualities:

  • Good skin elasticity and muscle tone
  • Are at or near their ideal weight but have fatty areas resistant to diet and exercise
  • Are in good physical and mental health
  • Do not have a significant amount of loose skin

Liposuction Options

Through small, discreetly placed incisions (typically the scar would be no bigger than what might result from a small mole being removed), Dr. Behar can improve your shape through various liposuction techniques. Traditional liposuction, tumescent liposuction, ultrasonic-assisted liposuction, are all techniques that Dr. Behar brings to the operating table to achieve an individual’s unique aesthetic goals.

Traditional liposuction involves inserting a hollow tube called a cannula through tiny incisions in the desired area. Fat is suctioned out using a gentle back and forth motion. A saline solution will be infused into the area prior to suctioning to reduce bleeding and improve the ability to remove unwanted fat.

Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL) removes fatty tissue with the assistance of sound waves that help Dr. Behar remove fat in areas of significant fibrous tissue such as flanks (love handles) and chest.

Post-Operative Instructions

featuredThe length of surgery depends on the size and number of areas to be treated. For most patients, this outpatient procedure can be recuperated from rather rapidly. Most patients will be able to resume regular activities within several days. Arrangements should be made for someone to drive you home from the surgery facility and to assist you during the first 24 hours. You will experience some pain and discomfort after surgery, but Dr. Behar will prescribe pain medications that will help alleviate discomfort. You should follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding wearing post-surgical garments as well as any dietary restrictions.  It is important to keep all follow-up appointments.
Strenuous work should not be resumed until approximately two to three weeks have passed, depending on the extent of your procedure. Be careful to avoid putting a significant amount of strain or stretch on the treated area.

During an initial consultation, Dr. Behar can help determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction. Fill out our contact form, call the office, or email us to schedule a consultation at one of our two offices located in the Nashville area.
