Facial Rejuvenation

Over time, our faces show signs of aging, gravity, and sun exposure. These changes result in an appearance that may look older than we feel. Our faces express our personality to those around us, and we want to be represented as healthy and youthful. We strive to help you “look as young on the outside as you feel on the inside”. Through expert facial rejuvenation techniques, Nashville area Plastic Surgeon Dr. Behar can turn back time and correct some of the indications of aging that have developed on the face.

Facelift & Necklift

A facelift/necklift will address those changes that develop in our cheeks, jowls, and neck. As the effects of gravity and time are seen, the youthful, triangular appearance of the face will take on a squarer look with relaxed jowls and skin laxity in the neck. Deep wrinkles and furrows in the face may also be a concern. Through discreetly placed incisions, Dr. Behar is able to perform a careful and natural facelift, or rhytidectomy, to turn back the hands of time and return your facial appearance to what you might have seen up to twenty years ago. The cheek and jowl will be elevated and pulled carefully and naturally back into a more youthful position. The skin and soft tissue of the neck will be adjusted appropriately so as to recreate a younger neckline. If desired, the facelift/necklift can be combined with additional facial rejuvenation procedures or performed as a stand-alone procedure. If aging changes is limited to the neck only. Then a simple Neck Lift will be an option.

Browlift/Eyelid lift surgery

content-image2Over time, our forehead and brows sag. The youthful arch of the eyebrows is lost. The area above and around our eyes takes on a tired and, perhaps, even angry appearance. With a browlift, Dr. Behar can achieve a brighter, more youthful appearance in your eyes and forehead. For those with only early aging changes in the brow, a limited browlift can be performed through the same upper eyelid incision that is used to rejuvenate the upper eyelids during blepharoplasty (see eyelid lift).
If the areas around your eyes are of greatest concern, rejuvenation techniques such as upper and lower blepharoplasty  can be provided. In these cases the excess skin and fatty fullness which lead to tired, older looking eyes can be removed through expertly placed incisions.  Botox therapy is another treatment that can rejuvenate (non-surgically) the area around the eyes.  During your consult, ask us for details.

Preparing for Surgery

You should plan to have someone drive you home from the surgery facility after surgery and to stay with you for the first 24-48 hours. If you smoke, you must quit nicotine completely at least six weeks prior to facelift surgery. This will help significantly with the recovery process. Your surgeon may instruct you to stop taking certain vitamins or supplements before and after surgery, so be sure to tell him what you are taking during your consultation. Most people need two to three weeks for recovery, so plan your work schedule accordingly. Recovery from browlift and eyelid lift is typically quicker.

The Procedure

content-imageThe anesthesia provider will typically administer general anesthesia to provide comfort during surgery. If you opt for a traditional facelift, the incision follows the hairline from the within the temples to around and behind the ears and ends in the lower scalp behind the ears.. The deeper layers of facial muscles may be lifted, and fat may be distributed to the face and jowls to improve the shape of the face. The skin is then redraped over the new facial structure and any excess skin is removed.

Recovery

After surgery, it is normal to have tenderness as well as numbness in the face. A large dressing may be applied to the facial area to reduce swelling, and medications will help with pain. You may also have a drain for a day or two to reduce swelling and remove excess fluid. Swelling and bruising will typically occur for at least a week or two after surgery, so plan any social or work requirements accordingly. Your bandages will be removed after a few days. You can return to work and regular activity as soon as a week after your facelift, but final results may not be seen for one to four months. In general, recuperation from browlift and eyelid lift is significantly easier and quicker. You shouldn’t bend over or lift heavy objects until Dr. Behar says it is safe to do so. Ask us before taking any medications we have not prescribed, and be sure to keep all follow-up appointments.

Consultation

The consultation is a time to get to know us and for us to understand your goals and expectation for facial rejuvenation surgery. Dr. Behar will examine your entire face to ensure that you are a good candidate for surgery. He will also review your medical history to see if you have any problems that would prevent satisfactory results. While smokers can safely undergo eyelid and brow lifting procedures, Dr. Behar (and nearly all plastic surgeons) feel that a smoker must refrain from tobacco/nicotine use for at least 6 weeks prior to and 6 weeks after a facelift to allow for safe and predictable healing.Once the consultation is complete, you should have the information needed to decide if facial rejuvenation is right for you. Contact Dr. Behar at his Cool Springs/Franklin or Smyrna office to learn how you can regain the youthful appearance you desire.
