Breast Lift and Reduction
Breast lift (mastopexy) is performed to address the changes in the breast appearance that develop over time. If, through weight loss, pregnancy or simply the passage of time, the breasts have lost their previously youthful appearance, then breast lift may be what is right for you. Through breast-lift technique, a younger, "perkier" result can be accomplished. In general, breast sag develops as an imbalance between the amount of breast tissue and the amount of breast skin that a women has. It can be addressed by either increasing the size of the breasts or reducing the amount of skin, or through a combination of both. Traditional mastopexy techniques rely on removing this extra skin and by hiding scars in location that do not catch the eye, namely around the areola, down the middle of the lower portion of the breast and, if necessary, in the fold of the breast. Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia, and recuperation is relatively rapid and smooth. While scars certainly result from incisions and removal of excess skin, these scars do fade over time and are dramatically less noticeable than the wonderful improvement seen in shape and positioning of your new, younger appearing breasts.
Patients often ask if breast implants alone might provide similar results to a breast lift. It is a mistake to consider that simply putting in larger and larger implants would provide a lift to the breasts. All that would happen is that the sag will be made worse by the increased weight and volume of the implants. There are, however, cases where breast augmentation is the ideal solution for those women who characterize their breasts as sagging. If the nipple remains at or above the level of the fold beneath the bottom of the breast and there remains a hollowness or concavity in the upper portion of the breast, then breast implants might be an ideal option. By placing implants in the proper position, the upper breast hollowness can be filled beautifully. An attractive, rounder and less tired looking breast can be achieved. The advantage of this technique is, of course, that scars are limited to only small incisions in the fold of the breasts or around the areola. It is really best to think of upper breast hollowness not as a sag, but as a breast volume loss. Under these circumstances it is best addressed with breast volume enhancement via breast augmentation. If your breasts are larger than you would like them to be, however, then a breast reduction can be considered. During breast reduction, the size of the breast is reduced and simultaneously a breast lift is performed. It is easiest to think of a breast reduction as simply a breast lift with reduction of both excess skin and excess breast tissue. During breast reduction, Dr. Behar will place scars in discreet locations and reduce and lift the breast tissue itself to allow you to enjoy breasts that weigh less, fit clothing better, and provide you with a slimmer appearance.
In general, patients who undergo breast lift or breast reduction are amongst the happiest encountered in our practice as they are able to rather quickly enjoy a day-to -day improvement in their appearance and comfort.
